Poetry By Mandy Pistikou ।Christmas Poem: 'Christmas Contrasts'

Mandy Pistikou

'Christmas Contrasts'

They are  rushing to get lights and trees to decorate
While bombs are being thrown elsewhere, how can they close their eyes?

They rushing to buy clothes while people feel cold elsewhere
Fancy clothes from fashion houses, they are paying a lot of money.

They  are rushing to fill platters with all kinds of delicacies
While in short distance victims of a disaster are dying slowly.

They are rushing to catch  big and fancy gifts
But they are  stingy to give those around them a little joy.

They are rushing  to light candles in monasteries and churches
And when they see  beggars they kick them away

Christmas! Days of love! They go out and they proclaim it
In the neighborhood a cruel husband , but unfortunately they remain  silent...

Christmas! Even though a grandmother is alone
In a little corner she is shedding tears and she remembers the old days.

Christmas! And yet there are underprivileged and orphans
Sick in hospitals,  prisoners.

Christmas! Everybody celebrates but they've forgotten why and how
The meaning of his birth, the little Christ is crying.

Christmas and New Year's Eve, with  parties and  fireworks
Santa Claus is expected to bring gifts and money.

With banquets and caviar, Porsche, lamé and worldly things
How can they look up to the moon and all the good things of the earth?

Without love in their hearts they live in absurdity
They are indifferent on one side and evil on the other.

My God! Enlighten us for a while! Give us wisdom.
Let's worship goodness with joy and brotherhood.
