(Lecturer at Pringsewu Muhammadiyah University, Lampung)
The poem Twilight & Drizzle is a work that describes the beauty of nature as well as a reflection on time, uncertainty and the journey of life. This poem uses dusk and drizzle as symbols to convey a deeper message about life and humans' relationship with nature. The following is an analysis of this poem based on the physical structure and inner structure of the poem:
1. Physical Structure of Poetry The physical structure of poetry refers to the formal elements that build poetry visually and technically. These elements include diction, imagery, figure of speech, typography, and rhyme.
a. Diction (Word Choice) This poem uses simple but meaningful diction. Words like “dusk,” “drizzle,” “spring,” “bride,” and “journey” create a poetic and contemplative atmosphere. The poet chooses words that are able to build images and convey deep emotions.
b. Imagination (Imaging) This poem is rich in imagery that activates the reader's senses. Some examples of images that appear: Visual images: "dusk and drizzle", "spring", "a bride and groom". Tactile imagery: "drizzling" (imagining gentle raindrops). Emotional images: "want to always be together", "never finish the journey". These images help the reader to feel the atmosphere described by the poet, both physically and emotionally, thereby enriching the reader's experience.
c. Figure of Speech (Language Style) This poem uses various figures of speech to enrich the meaning and beauty of the language: Metaphor: "dusk and drizzle like a bride and groom" (dusk and drizzle as a symbol of beauty and continuity). Personification: "he always comes" (the drizzle seems to have a will of its own). Symbolism: "spring" (symbol of awakening or new hope), "journey" (symbol of life or process). Rhetoric: "is this what is called spring?" (indicates a rhetorical question that invites the reader to reflect).
d. Typography (Visual Form of Poetry) This poem is written in lyrical prose, where the lines are not bound by any particular rhyme or pattern. This gives the poet the freedom to express his thoughts and feelings more naturally. The use of enjambment (line breaks) also creates a smooth flow and invites the reader to continue reading.
e. Rhyme and Rhythm Although this poem does not have a strict rhyme, the rhythm produced through the choice of words and repetition of certain sounds (such as "dusk", "drizzle", "spring") creates the effect of subtle musicality. This rhythm helps establish a calm yet contemplative atmosphere.
2. Inner Structure of Poetry The inner structure of poetry refers to the elements that build meaning and emotion in poetry. These elements include theme, the poet's feelings, tone, and message.
a. Theme The main theme of this poem is the beauty of nature and a reflection on time and the journey of life. This poem describes how dusk and drizzle become symbols of beauty that keep repeating themselves, while inviting readers to reflect on the meaning behind this beauty.
b. The Poet's Feelings The dominant feelings in this poem are awe, longing, and acceptance. The poet describes admiration for the beauty of twilight and drizzle ("I often see twilight and drizzle"), longing to always be with that beauty ("makes me want to always be with you"), and acceptance of the uncertainty and journey of life ("never ends the journey").
c. Tone The tone of the poem is contemplative and full of awe. The poet seems to be contemplating the beauty of nature and the meaning behind it. This tone can be felt from the choice of words that are subtle but full of emotion, such as "twilight and drizzle like a bride and groom" and "the journey never ends".
d. Mandate The message that can be taken from this poem is the importance of appreciating the beauty of nature and contemplating the meaning behind every moment in life. The poet invites readers not only to enjoy the beauty of twilight and drizzle, but also to reflect on the meaning and lessons that can be drawn from nature.
